Description:
High Intensity Sweeteners: Science and Controversy
The topic of high intensity sweeteners and health is not new, though interest is particularly high now and continues to grow. The issue has been addressed in multiple sessions at scientific meetings. Often only one side of the issue is presented. In other instances, opposing views are uncritically showcased. Neither approach is optimal for critically evaluating the science.
The Ingestive Behavior Research Center (IBRC) will host its 6th biennial international conference at Purdue University on September 22-24, 2015 using a format that will showcase the science on high intensity sweeteners. Scholars representing discrepant views will present reviews of data on selected topics (e.g., high intensity sweeteners and the gut (digestive, endocrine, microbiota responses), brain (addictive responses) and energy balance. The speakers will also question and rebut each other followed by discussion with those in attendance. The goal will be to move towards consensus. The proceedings will be published in a special issue of the journal Physiology & Behavior.
