Midwest Historical Archeology Conference
Midwest Historical Archaeology Oct. 13-Oct 15,2017

Description:

13th Annual Midwest Historical Archaeology Conference
West Lafayette, Indiana, October 13th-15th, 2017

The Tippecanoe County Historical Association (TCHA) and Purdue University (Anthropology, History, Language and Culture) will host MHAC 13 October 13th-15th, 2017 on the campus of Purdue University. The MHAC will be held in conjunction with a symposium marking the 300th anniversary of the founding of Fort Ouiatenon and the 50th anniversary of the Feast of the Hunter’s Moon.

The year 2017 marks both the 300th anniversary of the founding of Fort Ouiatenon, a French fur trade post on the bank of the Wabash River in Tippecanoe County, and the 50th anniversary of the Feast of the Hunter’s Moon, one of the largest annual re-enactments of the 18th century fur trade in the United States. The TCHA has recently acquired several acres of land surrounding the fort site in anticipation of creating an archaeological park. The timing of these milestone anniversaries and creation of the Ouiatenon preserve provides an excellent opportunity for reflecting on the ways in which archaeology and material culture can be used to educate the public about history, both the day-to-day experiences of people in the past and events of regional, national, or international significance.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Purdue Memorial Union (PMU) Union Club Hotel. The PMU hotel is on campus and a very short walk to the conference in Stewart Center (STEW) and evening reception in PMU on Saturday. Other hotels are located nearby at the Wabash Landing in West Lafayette or across the Wabash River in downtown Lafayette, both of which are a short drive or bus ride to campus. Public parking is available in the Grant Street parking garage across Grant St. from the PMU and Union Club Hotel.  To make a room reservation, please call 800-320-6291 and ask for the MMHAC room block.
