Making Spaces for Culture explores ways to enhance public and private space for arts and cultural uses. Students will be introduced to various forms and types of locations for public art and their roles in enhancing community, cultural and economic development goals.
The course will also explore site planning issues in developing cultural facilities – both within a particular site and among several sites. Some simple graphic exercises and writing of your thoughts and ideas will be essential. Your assignments will include the programming for a combination of activities to include a Festival or Community Arts Activity; and options for a Performing Arts or Museum Exhibit Facility; or a Cultural Arts District.
Expected time to complete course: 3 to 5 hours per week

- Asset mapping and liability inventories
- Site design standards and performance controls for special events, festivals or outdoor community arts
- Programming for performing arts centers
Learning methods
You learn by engaging in thoughtful peer exchanges led by the instructors, short exercises or assignments, and reflective writing. You can participate in live weekly discussions over Zoom or through a discussion board.
About the instructor
Lee Edgecombe, AIA, ASLA, AICP, CNU brings to a project in-depth and comprehensive knowledge of interdisciplinary design and planning experience in the fields of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning and Historic Preservation. His work involves a wide range of projects of various sizes, and includes architectural design, force protection and defensible space design, campus planning, public schools and parks and recreation, commercial and institutional facility renovations, space planning and interior design, military installation DOD design and planning guidelines, asset management and condition assessments. Mr. Edgecombe’s other responsibilities consist of contact person, interaction with client and consultants, reviews project management decisions, critiques design, planning and management considerations, design programming, and provides on-going technical control as part of the quality assurance team.
