Comprehensive Motivational Interviewing Training
Program Overview
comMIt (comprehensive motivational interviewing training) for health care professionals is an e-learning program accredited for 8 hours of approved continuing education credit for dietitians, nurses, pharmacists, physicians and social workers. The learner has three months to complete this highly interactive program and receive CE credit. Learners may stop at any point in the program and then return to it where they left off. Learners may also review each module completed as often as they would like during the three-month time frame. This unique program uses a sense making approach to motivational interviewing by Drs. Bruce A. Berger and William A. Villaume. The modules use numerous real examples of patient encounters and self-assessment questions to help learners internalize skills.

Continuing Education Information -- Target Audience
This course provides pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, nurses, physicians, social workers and dietitians with the skills necessary to utilize motivational interviewing in their daily patient interactions to promote positive actions and attitudes.
Learning Objectives (Pharmacist, Physician, Nurses, Social Work, Dietitans, Others):
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Identify the extent of the nonadherence problem
- Distinguish between traditional approaches to MI and the new sense making approach developed specifically for health care professionals (HCPs)
- Use appropriate MI skills to address patients’ concerns about health behaviors and treatments

Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians: Continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit will be awarded for the training course only. This is an application-based activity and is primarily constructed to instill, expand or enhance application competencies through the systematic achievement of specified knowledge, skills, attitudes and performance behaviors.
Nurses: Louisiana State University (LSU) Health School of Nursing, Faculty Development, Nursing Continuing Professional Development & Entrepreneurial Enterprise is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This enduring activity is being jointly provided by the LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing Continuing Nursing Education Department (Accredited Provider) and Berger Consulting, LLC (Joint Provider). Participants can earn a maximum of 8.0 contact hours of Nursing Continuing Professional Development (NCPD).

Claiming Credit: Successful completion of the program involves passing each module's graded assessment with a score of 70 percent or higher. Successful completion of this component will result in 8.0 contact hours of continuing pharmacy, nursing or medical education credit. Partial credit will not be awarded. Participation data of physicians, nurses, social workers, dietitians and others, will be provided to appropriate provider for the issuance of credit certificates. Pharmacist and Pharmacy Technician credit will be uploaded to CPE Monitor by Purdue University College of Pharmacy.
CPE Monitor, a national, collaborative effort by ACPE and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) to provide an electronic system for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to track their completed PCE credits, went into effect on Jan. 1, 2013. Purdue University College of Pharmacy (Purdue), as an ACPE-accredited provider, is required to report pharmacist and pharmacy technician CPE credit using this new tracking system. Pharmacist and pharmacy technician participants must provide their NABP e-Profile identification number and date of birth (in MMDD format) when they register for a CPE activity. It will be the responsibility of the participant to provide the correct information (i.e.,
e-Profile identification number and date of birth in MMDD format). If this information is not provided, NABP and ACPE prohibit Purdue from issuing CPE credit. Online access to their inventory of completed credits will allow pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to easily monitor their compliance with CPE requirements and print statements of credit.
