"Hyperloop" refers to vacuum tube transportation concept aimed to achieve speeds of jet airliners by electric power. Although dating back to Robert Goddard's patent in 1950, the interest in Hyperloop was reignited by Elon Musk in 2013 when he published a white paper detailing the plan to allow travel between Los Angeles to San Francisco in under 30 min. SpaceX launched an international student competition to build Hyperloop pods which drew hundreds of entries with Purdue Hyperloop team as one of top-finishers. Here we share the story and evolution of Purdue Hyperloop pod and review the key science and technology needs for enabling the new high-speed transportation system. We also discuss the potential economic implications of future increased connectivity it may bring about.
